How do I press DTF Transfers?

Ready to make some magic? Let’s turn that design into wearable art!

Step 1: Pre-Press Warm-up Give your garment a 5-second pre-heat. This pre-heat removes those pesky wrinkles and chases away sneaky moisture.

Step 2: First Press - Temperature: 285-300 degrees.Duration: 8-12 seconds (not too long, not too short—like a good nap!).Pressure: Medium. Remember: Every heat press has its own personality. A little trial and error might be needed to find that sweet spot.

Placement: Click here to download our Placement Guide.

Step 3: Peel Our transfers are hot peel transfers. Peel within 10 seconds after the transfers comes out from the press

Step 4: Second Press Cover Choice: For a shine look, use Teflon. For a matte look, go with parchment paper.Temperature: Still rocking 285-300 degrees.Duration: A brief 5 seconds. Pressure: Medium.

Pro Tip: Ensure even pressure for the best stickiness, and keep any garment features like pockets, seams, and zippers out of the pressing area.

Special Fabric Instructions:

Polyester/Blends: They’re heat magnets! Lower the temp to 275-290 degrees and reduce the time to 3-8 seconds. If your design’s playing hard to get, you can give it another press.

100% Polyester: This one’s a bit finicky. Go cooler at 250-285 degrees and quicker at 3-8 seconds. It’s like baking a new recipe—might take a few tries to perfect! If it’s not sticking, press again after a cooldown. There you have it! Now, go turn that transfer into some money!

What is a gang sheet?

A gang sheet is one large DTF sheet that combines multiple designs side by side so you get more printable area per dollar. Use our gang sheet builder to drag, drop, and arrange your designs, then we print and ship the single sheet.

What is a DTF transfer?

DTF, short for Direct To Film, is a precision printing method. Designs are printed directly onto a specialized film, which is then transferred to materials such as cotton, polyester, or linen using a heat press in just 15 seconds. Benefits of using DTF include vibrant full-color prints, sharp detail accuracy, compatibility with various materials, and elimination of manual processes like weeding. It’s an efficient and high-quality solution for diverse printing needs.

What type of press is required?

A standard heat press works best — commercial swing-away or clamshell presses give the most consistent results. Home iron presses can work for one-offs but won't apply even pressure across larger designs.

How durable are DTF transfers in the wash?

When pressed correctly, DTF transfers easily last 75+ washes with vibrant color retention. Wash inside-out on cold, tumble dry low, and skip the bleach to maximize lifespan.

What file format should my artwork be?

  • Files: Ensure all imported files are embedded.
  • Imaging: Please refrain from mirroring images.

Application Instructions

Important Note:Heat presses can vary in temperature and pressure settings, so the following are general guidelines. If you are a first-time customer, we recommend ordering a few extra designs to test and determine the optimal temperature, time, and pressure for your press. Please note that a household iron is not suitable for these transfers.

Warning:Do not press the color ribbon running along your transfer roll, as it will not come off the shirt.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Pre-Press the Garment:Before applying the image, pre-press the garment for 5 seconds to remove wrinkles and any moisture trapped in the fabric.

First Press:Set the heat press to 290-310 degrees Fahrenheit and apply medium pressure. Place the image in the proper position and press for 7-10 seconds. Note that each heat press may vary, so some experimentation may be necessary for optimal results.

Peel Hot/Cold:Our Transfers can be peeled hot or cold. We recommend Hot Peel. For Hot Peel, peel within 3 seconds in one solid motion. For Cold Peel, wait until the transfer has completely cooled and peel with one solid motion. Rubbing the film with a cloth is recommended before cold peel.

Second Press:Cover the design with Teflon (for a shiny finish), use the backside of the transfer paper (for a shiny finish), or parchment paper (for a matte finish). Set the heat press to 290-310 degrees Fahrenheit and apply medium pressure for 5-10 seconds.Note: Applying firm and even pressure is crucial for good adhesion. Avoid pressing over pockets, seams, buttons, zippers, etc.

Adjustments for Different Fabrics:Polyester/Blend Fabric: Reduce the temperature to 280-300 degrees Fahrenheit and shorten the press time to 3-8 seconds. These fabrics absorb heat faster. If the transfer is not adhering to the fabric, you can press multiple times, allowing the fabric to cool in between.

100% Polyester:Lower the temperature to 250-285 degrees Fahrenheit and reduce the press time to 3-8 seconds. This fabric may require some adjustments to determine the best settings. Practice is recommended to find the proper settings. If the transfer is not adhering, press multiple times, allowing the fabric to cool in between.
