How to apply DTF transfers with an iron

You can use a household iron for personal projects and testing with S2 DTF transfers. A heat press gives more consistent results. With an iron, a firm surface, steady pressure and a covered finishing press are especially important.

Prepare. Press. Peel. Finish.

Your step-by-step guide

  1. Prepare a firm, flat surface

Use a sturdy table or countertop with a heat-resistant pressing surface. Do not use a soft ironing board or an uneven surface. Lint-roll the garment and prepress for 10–15 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.

  2. Position and cover

Place the transfer ink-side down, align it, and secure with heat-resistant tape if needed. Cover with Teflon or parchment.

  3. Press each section—do not slide

Use Cotton/High, approximately 350°F (177°C), with steam OFF. With a numeric dial, use the highest setting safe for your fabric. Press straight down with very firm body-weight pressure for 15–20 seconds per section. Lift, reposition and repeat with slight overlaps. Do not move the iron as you would when ironing clothes.

  4. Peel at a low angle

For S2 hot-peel transfers, peel immediately while warm. If your transfer specifies cold peel, let it cool fully. Peel slowly at a low angle. If the design lifts, lay the film back down and repress for 10–15 seconds with firm pressure.

  5. Do the mandatory finishing press

Cover again and press for 10–15 seconds per section. This finishing press helps durability, smooths the design and reduces edge lifting. Let the garment cool flat, lightly stretch it, and check the edges. Spot-press edges for 5–10 seconds if needed.

If something needs a second look

Transfer is not sticking

Check the firm surface, increase manual pressure and extend the pressing time. If lifting during peeling, lay the film down and repress for 10–15 seconds.

Edges lift after washing

A skipped or rushed finishing press and insufficient pressure can cause lifting. Complete the covered 10–15-second finishing press on every section.

Cracking or patchy adhesion

Sliding the iron or uneven heat can leave inconsistent areas. Press straight down, then lift and overlap the next section slightly.

Give your work a good start

Press today. Wash later.

Let the garment cool flat. Wait 24–48 hours before washing.

  • Turn the garment inside out.
  • Wash cold with mild detergent.
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry.
  • Do not iron directly on the print.

Can I apply S2 DTF transfers with a household iron?

Yes, for personal projects and testing, but results vary because household irons deliver inconsistent heat and pressure. S2 recommends a heat press or Cricut for more consistent production results. Do not use an iron for bulk or resale work without testing.

What household iron setting should I use for S2 DTF transfers?

Use Cotton/High, approximately 350°F (177°C), with steam off. On a numeric dial, use the highest setting safe for your fabric. Press straight down for 15–20 seconds per section with very firm pressure.

Why do I need a second press when applying DTF with an iron?

The covered finishing press helps durability, smooths the transfer and reduces edge lifting. Press for 10–15 seconds per section after peeling.

How long should I wait to wash a shirt after iron application?

Wait 24–48 hours after applying with an iron. Wash inside out in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid bleach and softener; tumble dry low or hang dry, and do not iron the print directly.
